Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are the demonstrated or putative vectors of multiple arboviruses of veterinary and public health importance, capable of spreading a variety of viruses such as bluetongue virus (BTV), Schmallenberg virus (SBV), Oropouche virus (OROV) and many other viruses through biting animals and humans, endangering animal and human health and causing huge economic losses. In order to further study the species and distribution of Culicoides that transmit arbovirus and promote the prevention and control of midge borne animal diseases in China, the relevant papers at home and abroad were collected and reviewed. Among the 34 provincial administrative regions in China, the distribution of Culicoides has been reported except Beijing and Macau. There are 368 species of 12 subgenera of Culicoides recorded in China, with the largest number of species in Yunnan and the most widespread distribution of Culicoides homotomus. There are at least 42 species of Culicoides that can transmit or have the potential to transmit the arbovirus, of which 20 species are distributed in 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions of China. And the Culicoides vector of animal arboviruses have not yet been recorded in Beijing, Tianjin, Hong Kong and Macau. This review described the species and distribution of Culicoides vector of animal arboviruses in China, so as to provide a reference for the research of arbovirus.
